What is Nitrofurantoin used for?

Nitrofurantoin is commonly prescribed for urinary tract infections such as cystitis. Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder that usually results from a bacterial infection in your urinary tract.

Nitrofurantoin is effective against most bacteria responsible for causing cystitis. It does not work against the bacteria which cause colds and flu. Therefore do not take it for colds, flu, or any infection other than cystitis.

How does Nitrofurantion work?

Nitrofurantoin belongs to a class of medications called antibiotics. Antibiotics are a diverse group of drugs that protect your body from bacterial infections. The exact mechanism by which antibiotics do this varies.

Nitrofurantoin stops bacteria from making the genetic material. Doing this prevents bacteria from increasing in number. It also prevents bacteria from carrying out their normal functions. This allows our immune system to kill the weakened bacteria easily.

Nitrofurantoin alternatives

If you are allergic to Nitrofurantoin or the bacteria responsible for your cystitis are resistant to it, your doctor may prescribe one of these alternatives:

How to take Nitrofurantoin for cystitis

You can swallow Nitrofurantoin with a glass of water. Taking it with food or milk is advised to reduce the side effects. Follow the dosing plan given on your prescription label. For the treatment of cystitis, Nitrofurantoin is usually taken two or three times per day for a week.

Take it at the same time every day. Complete the treatment plan even if your condition improves after taking only a few doses. Do not increase or decrease the dosage even if your condition improves or gets worse.

How long does it take to work?

You may observe improvement in your condition as early as 24 hours after taking nitrofurantoin. Most individuals recover from cystitis after a few days of taking this medication.

It is important to complete the treatment plan as given on the prescription even if you feel fully healthy. If cystitis persists or your condition worsens, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
