About Elocon Scalp Lotion

Elocon Scalp Lotion contains 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate in a topical formulation designed to be used on the scalp. It is classified as a potent steroid and is used on the surface of the skin to calm redness and reduce the itchiness in conditions such as psoriasis or dermatitis. Psoriasis is a skin condition in which scaly, flaky, pink, itchy patches develop on the elbows, knees, and scalp, as well as other parts of the body. Dermatitis or contact dermatitis is a type of eczema triggered by contact with a particular substance. It causes the skin to be dry and irritated; there may be swelling and redness.

How does Elocon Scalp Lotion work?

The active ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion is 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate, which is a potent steroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory with anti-psoriatic activity. The absorption into the body is minimal, and the majority of this is excreted within 72 hours of application.

It is used on the scalp by adults and children over two years of age in cases of psoriasis and dermatitis.

Elocon Scalp Lotion reduces the redness, inflammation, and itchiness caused by these conditions.

In order to alleviate the condition and avoid flare-ups, it is essential to avoid triggers, which vary from person to person. These can include soaps, detergents, and perfumes. Since there is no known cure for these skin conditions, it is important to adopt certain lifestyle habits to prevent flare-ups as much as possible. In most people, this may mean using a body wash without perfumes and soap. Using washing products made purposely for hypersensitive and dry atopic skin will prevent further irritation and drying of the top layers of the skin.

Directions

How should I use Elocon Scalp Lotion?

The treated area should not be covered by bandages or plasters unless specifically instructed to do so by the doctor or skin specialist. Due to its steroid nature, the product should not be used in large quantities and over a long period of time.

Adults and children over two years of age should apply a few drops of Elocon Scalp Lotion onto the affected area of the scalp once a day. This lotion should be gently massaged into the scalp until it is completely absorbed. It does not matter whether the hair is wet or dry when the cream is applied to the scalp.

If a dose is omitted in error, the treatment should be applied as soon as the patient remembers. A double dose should not be used when this happens, but the dosage should be carried on as before.
When using Elocon Scalp Lotion for an extended period (e.g. several weeks or months), the product should not be stopped abruptly. A doctor should be consulted to taper the use of the lotion gradually before stopping altogether. Abrupt cessation of use after long-term use can cause flare-ups with stinging and burning of the scalp.

How long do I use Elocon Scalp Lotion for before I notice a difference?

Since Elocon Scalp Lotion contains a potent steroid component, the difference should be noticed from the very first use. The doctor should be consulted on the length of use.

When using Elocon Scalp Lotion for an extended period of time (e.g. several weeks or months), the product should not be stopped abruptly once the scalp problem is better. A doctor should be consulted to taper the use of the lotion gradually before stopping altogether. Abrupt cessation of use after long-term use can cause flare-ups with stinging and burning of the scalp.

Cautions

What are the side effects of Elocon Scalp Lotion?

Like all medicines, Elocon Scalp Lotion may have side effects, but not everybody gets them. The ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion is 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate, which acts as an anti-inflammatory with anti-psoriatic activity. The absorption into the body is minimal, and the majority of this is excreted within 72 hours of application.

Side effects may include allergic skin reactions, thinning of the skin, bacterial or secondary skin infections, acne, inflammation and infection of the hair follicles, discolouration of the skin, red marks, stinging, burning, itching, excessive hair growth, and blurred vision.

If a large amount of lotion is used or the product applied over a long period of time, this may affect a child's hormones which may lead to rounding of the face and delayed growth and development. This side effect rarely happens in adults, but changes in hormone levels may lead to tiredness, weakness, and dizziness when standing or sitting down.
