About Levonelle

Levonelle is a type of emergency contraception known as a morning-after pill. Despite being known as the ‘morning after pill’ it can be effective at preventing pregnancy for up to three days after unprotected sex, though the sooner it is taken the more effective it is likely to be.

Levonelle is most effective when taken within 12 hours of unprotected sex, although it can be effective for up to 72 hours after sex. You should bear in mind, however, that this effectiveness decreases over time.

Levonelle is thought to prevent:

  • up to 95% of pregnancies if taken within 24 hours
  • up to 85% of pregnancies if taken within 48 hours
  • up to 58% of pregnancies if taken within 72 hours

How effective is Levonelle

This particular form of emergency contraception is up to 95% effective if taken within 24 hours of an episode of unsafe intercourse. Naturally, its effectiveness decreases when treatment is delayed.

When taken between 25-48 hours after sex, it is 85% effective, and when treatment does not occur until between 49-72 hours after sex, its effectiveness falls to 58%. If it works, it can take the stress and worry out of a potentially life-changing incident.

If you are concerned about finding yourself in an emergency situation without access to a pharmacy, it is possible to get the morning-after pill and keep it on standby.

How does Levonelle work?

Levonelle contains a high dose of the hormone progestin, which is usually found in a normal contraceptive pill and it is this active ingredient which enables it to stop an unwanted pregnancy from occurring.

Depending on what stage of your menstrual cycle you’re in, it works by either:

  • inhibiting the release of an egg from the ovary during ovulation
  • interfering with the fertilisation of the egg.

Directions

What dose should I choose?

Levonelle is prescribed as a single 1500mg dose of levonorgestrel though it can be bought in a pack of two. This second tablet may be worth having in the case of vomiting after taking the first or to give you peace of mind that you have a dose to hand in case of a similar situation occurring again in the future.

How should I take Levonelle?

You can take Levonelle with or without food and water, but it must be taken within the first 12 to 24 hours for optimum results and no later than 72 hours after an incidence of unprotected intercourse.

If you have passed the 72-hour window, then it is not too late. Instead, you can try EllaOne, which can be taken up to 120 hours after.

Cautions

What are the side effects of Levonelle?

Levonelle has been found to be entirely safe in medical tests, though, as with any medication, there can be side effects.

In the case of Levonelle, it can cause:

  • abdominal pain

  • tiredness
  • irregular bleeding

Less commonly women experience:

  • breast tenderness
  • dizziness
  • dizziness
  • vomiting

On the rarest occasions, women can experience an allergic reaction to Levonelle, which can be seen as swelling of the face and/or an itchy rash.

Of the less severe aftereffects, symptoms are not long-lasting, but if you are concerned about them or if they do not disappear after 48 hours, it is wise to seek guidance from your GP.

Certainly, if you experience the symptoms of an allergic reaction, you must consult your doctor or one of our specialists at Click Pharmacy right away.

Always read the patient information leaflet before starting your treatment. The patient information can be found here.
