Overview
Vicks VapoRub is an ointment used to help you get rid of nose and throat inflammation, blocked nose, sore throat and cough due to cold. It is easy to apply and contains four active ingredients which are safe for your body.
These active ingredients are Camphor, Turpentine oil, Levomenthol and Eucalyptus oil. They are effective against nasal catarrh, congestion, sore throat and cough associated with colds.
Directions
Adults and children over the age of 6 years can use Vicks VapoRub by either rubbing it (method 1) on their chest or inhaling it (method 2). However, children between the ages of 2 and 6 can only use method 1.
Method 1: Rubbing on the chest

Hash your hands.

Scoop out a dime-sized amount of the ointment with your finger.

Place it on your hand and rub your hands together to spread it on your palms.

Gently massage the ointment on your chest and neck.

Continue to massage until a tin layer covers your chest and neck.

Wear loose clothes that allow vapours to reach your mouth and nose easily.

Repeat up to 3 times a day as needed.
Method 2: Inhalation

Take hot (not boiling) water in a suitable bowl.

Put one to two 5ml spoonfuls of ointment in it.

Allow the ointment to melt and form a mixture.

Inhale the vapours by keeping a sufficient distance from the bowl to avoid burns.

Continue to inhale the vapours for 10-15 minutes.
- Repeat up to 2-3 times a day as needed.
Storage

Store below 25°C.

Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use after the expiration date printed on the jar.
Cautions

For external use only.

Do not apply it directly on your nose.

Do not apply it on open wounds or damaged skin.

Do not swallow it.

Do not use the direct inhalation method for children under 6 years old.

Children must be supervised when using the direct inhalation method.

Contact your doctor or pharmacist if your condition does not improve after a few days of use.

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications or over-the-counter products including herbal products.

Do not heat or re-heat the medicated vapour mixture in a microwave.
- Keep sufficient distance from the medicated vapour mixture while inhaling to avoid burning your face.

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
- In children under 2 years old.
Side effects
Vicks VapoRub is considered a safe medication. However, it can cause the following side in some individuals:

Irritation of the skin (redness and itchiness)

Irritation of the eyes (red and watery eyes)
- Allergic reaction

Turpentine oil (5.00 % w/w): Reduces pain and relieves cough.
Levomenthol (2.75 % w/w): Provides a cooling effect, ameliorates pain and reduces nasal congestion.
Eucalyptus oil (1.50 % w/w): Reduces inflammation of nose and throat.
Other ingredients
Thymol, cedarwood oil and white soft paraffin.
