Treatment Information
Overview
Potassium Citrate is taken orally for the management of Cystitis in women. The mixture is quickly absorbed into the body where it causes it to become a carbonate that works by neutralizing the excess acid in the urine, resulting in less painful and low urine output.
Cystitis results from bacteria infiltrating the urethra where they proliferate and spread up to the bladder. The large number of bacteria in the bladder makes the urine more acidic to the lining of the bladder, hence the more frequent urge to urinate and a burning sensation.
If you have cystitis, it is advised that you should drink at least 2 liters of water per day. It is also highly recommended that after treatment you should drink Cranberry juice or take a Cranberry-derived supplement to avoid re-infection. If the symptoms persist after 3 to 4 days of the use of these medications, consult your doctor and change the course of medications with the advice of your doctor.
