About Evorel Patches
Evorel Patch is an oestrogen-only Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for oestrogen deficiency symptoms in pre and post-menopausal women. Evorel is a patch that gradually releases hormones into the body. The treatment is suitable for you if you have difficulty swallowing tablets or if you have trouble remembering to take a medicine every day. Evorel is a patch placed on the skin and changed twice weekly.
Evorel Patches are an easy way to ease the annoying and life-altering symptoms of menopause, like hot flushes, strong heartbeat, osteoporosis, dryness of the eyes, mood swings, reduced sex drive, night sweats, vaginal dryness, irritability, insomnia, and pain during sex.
The ingredient released is estradiol, which emulates the female sex hormone oestrogen. It is absorbed slowly through the skin without the need to apply cream or swallow tablets. These patches reduce the risk of developing some cancers for women with an intact uterus compared to some other HRT options.

How effective is the Evorel Patch?
Evorel Patches are ideal for women who do not have a uterus. It also effectively relieves menopausal symptoms in women who have not had a hysterectomy and therefore require the hormone oestrogen. Evorel Patches are suited for women who have already reached menopause but still suffer distressing symptoms. They are also beneficial for post-menopausal women who are more likely to suffer osteoporosis-related bone issues.
Why choose the Evorel Patch?
Evorel patch is a quick and straightforward way to receive the exact dose of oestrogen you require daily. In addition, it frees you from forgetting to take a tablet or worrying about applying the cream.
Evorel Patch is a convenient alternative for patients who cannot or prefer not to swallow tablets every day. The quick and easy application means you receive the hormone you need without worrying about forgetting to take it or anyone else being affected.
What is contained in the Evorel Patch?
The active ingredient in the Evorel patch is estradiol hemihydrate.
The inactive ingredients are:
- Duro-Tak 387-2287, which makes the patches stick
- Guar gum
- Hostaphan MN19 on the backing film.
In case of any allergic responses, consult your GP or Click pharmacy doctor before going ahead and purchasing your prescription.
How do Evorel Patches work?
Evorel patch works by supplying the body with oestrogen via the skin to compensate for a loss of this hormone. The active ingredient is estradiol, also referred to as oestradiol, which is oestrogen in a synthetic form. Evorel patch slowly releases estradiol which imitates the action of the female sex hormone oestrogen.
Evorel Patch is an HRT containing the sex hormone affected during menopause. Oestrogen is depleted during this time, which results in the unpleasant and unwanted side effects that many women experience. By topping up the decreasing oestrogen levels with estradiol, many women experience ease in issues such as night sweats and mood swings.
For women with an intact uterus, progestogen must typically be added to Evorel to prevent adverse endometrial effects, like hyperplasia and cancer.
Directions
What dose should I choose?
Take the lowest effective dosage for the minimum duration for the initiation and continuation of treatment. Your GP will monitor your reaction to the medication before confirming which dosage is best. The treatment regimen with the Evorel Patch may be either cyclic or continuous sequential.
Evorel is a patch placed on the skin and is changed twice weekly. Evorel is a square-shaped, transparent, self-adhesive transdermal delivery system (Patch) of 0.2 mm thickness for application to the skin surface. Evorel is available in four sizes with four different concentrations:
- Evorel 25 is marked CE25 and contains 1.6 mg estradiol with a release rate of 25 micrograms of estradiol in 24 hours.
- Evorel 50 is marked CE50 and contains 3.2 mg estradiol with a release rate of 50 micrograms of estradiol in 24 hours.
- Evorel 75 is marked CE75 and contains 4.8 mg estradiol with a release rate of 75 micrograms of estradiol in 24 hours.
- Evorel 100 is marked CE100 and contains 6.4 mg estradiol with a release rate of 100 micrograms of estradiol in 24 hours.
How to apply the Evorel Patch?
- Before application, wash the skin and dry it thoroughly
- Remove the Evorel Patch from its pouch and peel off half the protective liner from the back of the patch.
- Place the Evorel Patch onto the desired area of hairless, intact skin, sticky side down. Next, peel off the other half of the liner, pressing the patch down onto the skin for 30 seconds.
For how long can I use Evorel Patches?
You can use Evorel Patches for several years to ease the side effects of menopause. In the UK, the average menopause age in women is 51, though some women start normal menopause as early as 45. So, premature menopause would start earlier than this. In most situations, menopausal symptoms usually last between 4 and 5 years; HRT may be used during this time.
It is better to have annual gynaecological checkups and a medication review to ensure you are still on the safest and most beneficial form of HRT for your health.
Cautions
Side effects
Aside from the benefits of Evorel Patches, there are potential side effects which may be experienced by some women and not by others. Doctors usually recommend waiting at least 12 weeks before changing HRT so your body may get used to the effects of the hormones and balance out. After this time, most women find their side effects disappear. However, if you are concerned, you may speak to your doctor anytime about the side effects you experience.
The common side effects of the patch are headache, breast tenderness/pain, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, painful joints, tingling in the hands or feet, vaginal bleeding or discharge, breakthrough bleeding, uterine disorders, anxiety, mood swings, water retention, fatigue, dizziness, weight gain, itchiness or inflamed skin where the patch is applied.
Stop using Evorel Patch and seek medical attention immediately if you notice early signs of any of the following:
• Blood clots – pain and swelling of the legs, difficulty breathing.
• Stroke – sudden migraines, blurred vision.
• Heart disease – chest pain which extends to the neck or arm.
• Liver disease – yellow colouration of the skin or eyes.
If you are concerned about the adverse effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it immediately and talk to your doctor or a health care expert at Click Pharmacy.
Other warnings to consider
HRT pose an increased risk of developing breast cancer, endometrium or ovaries. However, combined HRTs such as Evorel Patches help to lower this risk in women who have not had their wombs removed.
Evorel Patches are not recommended for women with heart disease or a heart attack, as HRT may affect the heart and circulation.
Blood clots are likely to occur in HRT users. The risk of developing them, especially in the first year of using a treatment, may be increased in certain situations if you:
- May have cancer which is sensitive to oestrogen (including uterine cancer)
- Suffer from a blood clotting disease, or have ever had a blood clot
- Ever had breast cancer
- Have untreated endometrial hyperplasia (an excessively thick womb lining)
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have recently had a heart attack or stroke
- Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Suffer from porphyria (a rare hereditary blood disease)
- Have a history of liver disease
- Are allergic to the ingredients of the patch
Inform your GP if you plan to use Evorel Patch and have ever had any of the following health complications:
- Fibroids
- Impaired liver function
- Diabetes
- Uterine problems, including endometriosis or endometrial hyperplasia
- Circulation problems (e.g. angina, heart attack)
- High risk of blood clots
- Asthma
- Migraine
- Gallstones
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Epilepsy
- High-fat levels in the blood
- Fluid retention
- History of severe allergic reactions
- High blood pressure
- Otosclerosis (a hereditary ear disorder)
- A family history of breast cancer or another oestrogen-sensitive cancer
