What is Dutasteride?
Dutasteride is a prescription medication primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, and is used off-label for hair regrowth in men experiencing male pattern baldness. It belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, which work by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for prostate growth and hair loss.
Dutasteride is typically available as 0.5mg capsules and must be taken under medical supervision. It is a potent treatment that prevents hair thinning and reduces the risk of prostate-related complications.
How does Dutasteride work?
Dutasteride works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone responsible for prostate enlargement and hair loss in men. By reducing DHT levels, Dutasteride helps to shrink the prostate, improve urinary symptoms in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and slow down hair thinning in male pattern baldness.
Alternatives to Dutasteride
There are several alternatives to Dutasteride for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hair loss. One common alternative is Finasteride (Propecia). Both Dutasteride and Finasteride work by reducing DHT levels, but Finasteride targets only one type of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, whereas Dutasteride targets both. Some studies shown that Dutasteride is highly effective at preventing hair loss than Finasteride.
Other treatment options for BPH include alpha-blockers like Tamsulosin and Alfuzosin, which help relax prostate muscles to improve urine flow. For hair loss, Minoxidil is a popular topical solution that stimulates hair growth.

Directions
Dutasteride Dosage
The recommended dosage of Dutasteride for hair loss is 0.5mg once daily. It should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food, for the best results. The capsule must be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, or opened.
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and refer to the patient information leaflet before use.
