Overview

What is Kliofem?

Kliofem is a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to treat symptoms of menopause in postmenopausal women.  It contains:

  • Estradiol (2 mg): Identical to the estrogen hormone produced by the ovaries.
  • Norethisterone acetate 1mg: A synthetic progestogen that mimics the effects of natural progesterone in the body.

It comes in the form of combined HRT treatment tablets that are taken orally every day without interruption. Kliofem helps relieve unpleasant menopause symptoms by replacing diminishing estrogen levels and balancing out the hormones in women after menopause.

What is Kliofem used for?

Kliofem tablets have two main uses:

Relieve Menopausal Symptoms: Take HRT medications like Kliofem to relieve moderate to severe menopause symptoms that hinder daily life, such as:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort
  • Mood changes like depression and irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Reduced sex drive

Prevention of Osteoporosis: Estrogen plays a key role in maintaining healthy bones. Declining estrogen after menopause can lead to weak and fragile bones, increasing the risk of fractures.

Kliofem helps prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with additional risk factors, provided other osteoporosis medications are unsuitable.

How does Kliofem work?

Kliofem contains synthetic versions of estrogen and progestogen, which mimic the hormones naturally produced by the ovaries. This medication works as hormone replacement therapy to relieve menopausal symptoms with the help of active ingredients in two key ways.

The estrogen component helps reduce hot flashes and night sweats, alleviates vaginal dryness, improves sleep quality, and enhances irregular mood. Meanwhile, the progesterone component plays a crucial role in balancing estrogen levels in the endometrium (uterine lining) and reducing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

By replenishing diminishing levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body, Kliofem helps restore hormonal balance and alleviate discomfort associated with menopause.

Your GP can help determine if these alternative options may be more suitable for women whose health conditions require a different approach.

Kliofem reviews

Based on patient experiences, Kliofem can help relieve hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and sleep disturbances.

Here are some of the reviews:

"I have been taking it now for 8 months after no period for over a year.. I did have some fairly irregular bleeding for the first 2 months ( for the last 2 weeks of each pack) but nothing since then. The hot flushes and sweats stopped in less than 10 days." - Munchyseeds

"I've been on HRT for 11 years, am in my early 60s and have not put weight on. In fact a few years into using HRT I lost 5 lbs that had crept on. I have however, cut down on the amount I eat because our metabolism changes post menopause anyway. I am also far less active compared to how I was years ago when I was either working in a busy job, dashing about, or running after my kids!" - JinglingHellsBells

Directions

How to take Kliofem

Always follow the dosage instructions from your doctor when taking Kliofem tablets. Take the tablet by following these common dosage guidelines:

  • Take one tablet with a glass of water
  • Take at approximately the same time each day
  • You can take it with or without food
  • Swallow the tablet whole without chewing

Start a new strip as soon as you finish one, every day without interruption. You may begin taking Kliofem any day that is convenient.

Let your doctor know if you think the dosage is too strong or not strong enough. They may make small adjustments in their dose based on your response and symptoms.

What if you miss a dose?

  • If you have a missed dose and it has been less than 12 hours, take it as soon as possible.
  • If it has been more than 12 hours, skip the missed tablet and continue with the next dose as usual.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist in case you have skipped the dose for more than 12 hours. In case of unexpected symptoms, talk to your doctor.

How long does Kliofem take to work?

You may start seeing improvements in menopause symptoms within 3-4 weeks after taking Kliofem tablets. However, the full effects can take up to 3 months.

See your doctor if symptoms do not improve after 3 months. They may adjust your medication or switch you to another oestrogen-only HRT or combination therapy.

For osteoporosis prevention, you may need to use Kliofem for at least 12 months to maintain its protective effects on bone health.
