Treatment Information
Overview
The Otovent autoinflation device is a non-surgical and drug-free treatment for glue ear (otitis media with effusion). This device allows fluid to drain from the middle ear by opening the eustachian tubes and thus easing symptoms.
Otovent is also useful for equalizing ear pressure during flights or scuba diving. This natural treatment is very beneficial for improving your quality of life because it minimizes the need for surgery and prevents hearing and learning issues which can be caused by glue ear.
Directions
This device is suitable for adults as well as children whose age is more than 3 years. Children's use should be supervised by an adult.
How to use:
-
Set the Otovent balloon to the nosepiece.
-
Press the nosepiece against one nostril while closing the other with your finger.
-
Close your mouth and breathe in deeply. Then blow through your nostril to inflate the balloon until it becomes as big as a grapefruit.
-
Do the same process on the other nostril too.
- If you do not feel any ear pressure changes, try swallowing maneuvers while keeping your mouth closed and the balloon inflated.
Frequency of use:
In the first week, use it three times a day. i.e., morning, noon, and evening.
After the first week, you have to use it twice.
Continue for 2-3 weeks, and then consult a doctor to see if further treatment is required or not.
Cautions
-
If you have an allergy to latex, it will be better to consult your doctor before using Otovent because these balloons contain latex. Stop using it if any allergic reactions occur.
-
Always supervise children during use and never use toy balloons as substitutes—they don't provide the correct pressure for effective treatment.
-
You might feel discomfort in your ears, or you may experience dizziness during use. This discomfort usually decreases with continued use and shows that the treatment is working.
-
Some people may experience nosebleeds due to the nose’s sensitivity, but this is typically harmless. However, it will be okay after going to ENT.
Reading the Patient Information Leaflet is very necessary before you start your treatment. To read the Patient Information Leaflet of the Otovent Glue Ear Treatment
