What is Xyloproct and what is it used for?

Xyloproct is a topical ointment used to relieve pain, discomfort and itching associated with haemorrhoid (piles) and other anal or rectal conditions. It contains two active ingredients lidocaine and hydrocortisone which belongs to a group of medicines known as local anaesthetics.

Doctors may also prescribe Xyloproct for anal fissures or post-surgical discomfort. It helps soothe the affected area, providing relief from pain and inflammation.

How does Xyloproct work?

Xyloproct contains lidocaine and hydrocortisone, which work together to relieve symptoms of haemorrhoid, reduce swelling and itching, and lower the risk of infection.

  • Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic that numbs the affected area, reducing pain and discomfort.
  • Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that helps decrease swelling, redness, and irritation.

Together, these ingredients provide effective relief from haemorrhoid, anal fissures, and other rectal conditions.

Directions

How to use Xyloproct ointment

For external haemorrhoid:

  1. Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment.
  2. Gently wash and dry the anal area before application.
  3. Take a small amount of ointment on your fingertip and gently apply it to the affected area.

For internal haemorrhoid:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Screw the nozzle provided onto the tube.
  • Insert the nozzle into the back passage and squeeze gently.
  • Keep it in place for 1 to 2 minutes to allow absorption.
  • Remove the applicator and wash it thoroughly after each use.
  • Wash your hands.

If you put too much ointment talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Cautions

Xyloproct side effects

Like all medications, Xyloproct may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include:

  • Mild burning or irritation at the application site
  • Temporary redness or itching
  • Skin thinning with prolonged use

If you experience severe allergic reactions, swelling, or difficulty breathing, stop using Xyloproct ointment and seek medical attention immediately.

Always read the patient information leaflet for a full list of side effects.

Xyloproct warnings

Before using Xyloproct ointment, consider the following precautions:

  • Do not use it if you are allergic to lidocaine, hydrocortisone, or any other ingredient.
  • You have ever had an allergic reaction to other local anaesthetics or to other corticosteroid medicines.
  • Avoid prolonged use, as corticosteroids can cause skin thinning and irritation.

  • Do not apply it to broken or infected skin.

Interaction with other medicines

Xyloproct may interact with other medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medications you are taking before using Xyloproct ointment.
